AAEA has been an affiliate of the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education (AAACE) and of the Northwest Adult Education Association (NWAEA). Currently it is linked with Commission on Adult Basic Education (COABE). The first AAEA statewide conference was held in The International Council for Adult Education (ICAE) is a global network created in , composed of non-governmental organizations, regional, national and sectoral networks in more than 75 countries.

The American Association for Adult and Continuing Education (AAACE) is a (c)3 not-for-profit organization that offers memberships for the purpose of lifelong learning. However, neither AAACE nor any of its commissions or SIGs is an accrediting organization. Membership dues are non-refundable and non-transferable. The Association is one of the oldest regional adult education organizations in the United States. For more than a half century, MPAEA has been on the cutting edge of adult education as a state, regional and national imperative.
